And they're out!

The fence is dug and up, the ramp is out, the coop is complete (except for permanent roosts and nest boxes) and the chickens are OUTSIDE! (You have no idea how excited the dog is!)

Now, does anyone know how to get them to go in at night? We have been playing Chicken Run for the past two nights trying to get them to go in at night and roost. They are just digging nests under the coop and falling asleep there...HELP! I swear they just were supposed to know how to do this on their own...

I recounted the chickens last night as they were all roosted for the night. Sitting perfectly still it was easy to see I had 14. Not 13. I guess I was always all right counting and getting 13 as long as I didn't get less...But we for surely, definitely, without a doubt, have 14.

Plastics

This week is going to be rainy, all the way to Friday...I have no excuse not to do Spring Cleaning inside because of it. Old clothes to Goodwill, toys to younger cousins, windows washed, all that good stuff.

This year I am adding one more thing to the pile (but I can't decided if I toss it, or give it to Goodwill...can you help with the decision??) Plastics. I showed Andrew the findings from the President's Cancer Panel, and he finally agreed that we could get rid of all our plastics. We are starting in the kitchen.

Here are some of the findings, you can read the full report here.

Approximately 41 percent of Americans will be diagnosed with cancer at some point in their lives, and about 21 percent of us will die from cancer. The Presidential Panel noted cancers are becoming more common, particularly in children, and the proliferation of chemicals in water, foods, air and household products is widely suspected as a factor according to the Panel.

What I found most interesting was their list of preventive actions, most of which I have always preached. Here are a few:

Filtering home tap or well water... Unless the home water source is known to be contaminated, it is preferable to use filtered tap water instead of commercially bottled water.

Storing and carrying water in stainless steel, glass, or BPA- and phthalate-free containers.

Microwaving food and beverages in ceramic or glass instead of plastic containers.

Choosing, to the extent possible, food grown without pesticides or chemical fertilizers and washing conventionally grown produce to remove residues.

Exposure to antibiotics, growth hormones, and toxic run-off from livestock feed lots can be minimized by eating free-range meat raised without these medications if it is available. Avoiding or minimizing consumption of processed, charred, and well-done meats.

Choose products made with non-toxic substances or environmentally safe chemicals.

Reducing or ceasing landscaping pesticide and fertilizer use will help keep these chemicals from contaminating drinking water supplies.

Turning off lights and electrical devices when not in use reduces exposure to petroleum combustion by-products because doing so reduces the need for electricity, much of which is generated using fossil fuels.

Reduce or eliminate exposure to secondhand tobacco smoke in the home, auto, and public places.

While I have been slowly trying to ease away from plastics I always seem to fall back into them. The cute melamine plates for the patio, the fun Transformer set for my son, the cute Cinderella cup for my daughter, you know the drill. It is all going in the box and whether or not that box goes to Goodwill, I haven't decided yet. I did find a site Life Without Plastic which has great options including Stainless Steel cups so I don't have to watch the kids every second when they are drinking! (I'm a little scared of broken glass!) I think this cup from their site is adorable and might be a good replacement for those character cups my kids love so much!

So, do you think you could give up plastics? And what is better, Goodwill (to contaminate other families home, or the dump, to contaminate the soil and where it will end up regardless?)

It is raining today. All day, cold, miserable rain. In a few hours they say it will turn to snow...

We were spoiled by our warm March and April weather, this small cool down is a total kick in the face.

I'm praying this weekend will be nice-it is jammed packed with parties, bbq's, and outside work that needs to get done! Here's hoping!

Moving day!

Yesterday was moving day! The chicks seem so happy in their new home!

They are extremely curious when I come to the door. They crowd around me so much when I change their water and food that I am scared I'm going to step on one!

They are also at that fun stage where they are just figuring out what wings are for. When I'm in the coop, I'm a temporary roost.

Andrew is still building the roosts and the nest boxes will go in later this summer. We'll start the run in a few days, but the chicks are still too young to go out.

As we speak, Andrew is putting the finishing touches on the coop today. We decided the floor needed some sort of laminate for easy cleaning. So he is just finishing the floor trim and the chicks will be in...which NEEDS to happen NOW because they are getting big! I think I will try to weight them tomorrow out of curiousity...

Our garden has all kinds of yummy things coming up in it already. The potatoes have popped through, the peas are ready for a trellis, the carrots are just starting to come up as well as asparagus and beets. I've already been able to use chives and found some green onions that, even though the garden was tilled 3 times, decided to come back. I've replanted them and we will see how hardy they are! I'm praying for a nice weekend so that I can plant a second crop of carrots and peas and because we need the fence dug for the chicken run! Busy busy, I love spring!

I went to work on Sunday morning for a few hours. The kids went to play at their Grandma's house, and Andrew took care of some dirty work. After a long conversation we decided that Crutches #1 and #2 would not fair well. Even if they did heal mostly, they would be pecked by the other chickens and we would have to worry about re-injury, or injury to the other leg. So I came home and their little box was empty. I'm not asking how or where, but they are gone. Now I'm questioning my ability to butcher the adult hens in a year...

But on the bright side, the coop is almost done. We are just finishing up trim, the door needs a coat of paint, and we will probably paint the inside for easier cleaning. Then the 13 chicks get to move into their new home, which needs to happen fast as their wings are getting full of feathers!

Earth Day is this Thursday and I have nothing planned for the kids and I to do. Perhaps we will spend the day in the garden...Do you have plans yet?

Rain and feathers

We have finally gotten nice rain these last two day. Before that we were incredibly dry. (So dry in fact that we had a grass fire burn over 300 acres and threaten our yards two weeks ago- thank god for fire helicopters.) But where it burned it it coming up beautifully green, I am so amazed how quickly nature can replenish itself.

Our chicks, who were cute little downy hens a few days ago, are already growing feathers on their wings. They are eating three times as much and I feel like they are out growing their box already. The two with bad legs are still the same. They eat and drink. Crutches #1 (the not so bad leg) seems to be using his hurt leg more. I keep reading that I am supposed to bandage it or make a mock splint, but I'm afraid I'll hurt it more. As long as it seems to be getting better I'm just going to leave it alone. Crutches #2 (the really bad one) seems to be the same. (That is him below)

I think his leg bone was totally crushed at the joint so I doubt he is going to heal. So now comes the hard part. I'd love to let her live, but the other chickens will peck at her, making her life really miserable. It seems a waste to just clock her once and be done when we've got a perfectly good cat who would love to have some fun. Or is that even more cruel?

It has been approaching a year since I have taken to this blog. My laptop broke, my husband got laid off, I began working more, and the time wasn't there. I tugged with emotions as to whether I enjoyed life out of the blog-o-sphere, or if I missed all those fabulous connections I had made.

Well I think it is obvious, I've totally missed it.

Over the past 9-10 months we've been through some small changes, we are still a "green" family. We still have two kids, a big dog, however our yard has finally become grass instead of just mud. We've also adopted into our family 15 new friends.

We now have a small chicken farm. And when I say chicken farm, I mean adorable 2 day old Plymouth Barred Rock chicks living in a box in our garage.

They came in the mail yesterday from Mt Healthy Hatchery. (My husband gets a kick out of saying we got them from the mail. He is used to going to the farm store and getting a straight run of whatever they had.) I knew I wanted to raise laying hens, something somewhat docile and curious, and most importantly, I wanted brown eggs. When I spotted the plymouth barred rocks I fell in love. See adorable...

The kids love watching the chicks. I pretty sure Cade is going to be able to tell the apart as he loves watching their personalities. We have two chicks we are currently nursing. They both have broken legs. One, kind of bad, one really bad. They are in separate boxes and I am hoping they are able to heal. So for now, we feed them, water them, and change their bedding, and spend hours in the garage just watching them.

Organic food, Not healthier???!!

I've been so bummed out since I've read this article ORGANIC FOOD IS NO HEALTHIER, STUDY FINDS.

Because, on the surface people who buy organic foods, who are not completely educated as to why they do it, might just stop. Plain and simple, plants get their nutrients from the soil. Organic farmers maintain their soil’s nutrient level by adding compost and manure and by rotating crops, whereas most non organic farmers maintain their crop yields by adding synthetic chemical fertilizers to their soil. Every time I hear the word synthetic I cringe. To me a natural environment and something synthetic don't blend.

I don't buy organic foods because I think it has a higher concentration of vitamins. I don't think it is healthier than its chemically sprayed identical twin.

I buy organic because it is more sustainable for our environment. I know my produce is not full of pesticide residue, and I do not worry about health problems related to pesticides, insecticides, and fertilizers because mine have been grown without..

A simple reminder

Slowly getting the computer situation taken care of. In other words, for now, my husband and I are learning to share.

It is a lot harder than it looks and I give my kids a big pat on the back for being such good sharers, most of the time!

But for now I'm going out to the garden. The green beans are out, as is the green onions and new potatoes. Corn will be coming soon along with the edamame. Yum! Our final harvest will be leeks. I can't wait.

We've been busy harvesting this last week, and will be busy for weeks to come-so I've been preparing with a lot of pre-typed blog posts. Something I tend to stay away from, but I didn't want to completely abandon my little space. Well, last night my laptop gave me the spinning wheel of death. We're pretty sure everything is lost. Pictures, addresses, links, and prepared blog posts...
Today I found out that my weekend plans are shot. Instead of a relaxing weekend with the kids in the water and sun I now am scrambling to find babysitters- and I haven't even told the kids the trip is off. Since they've been looking forward to it for over a week, this is not going to be fun. I hate breaking their little hearts.
I'm waiting for the 3rd thing to happen- they say bad things come in threes. (I'm praying for a broken nail to get this slump over with...)

Making your own laundry soap is a lot of work. I don't do it. I usually buy Seventh Generation or Restore (There is a great little eco-shop near me call The Nest, I can bring in my Restore bottle and they will refill it for less than half the price of buying a new bottle! LOVE IT!)

I'll be honest- 4th of July is probably our least green holiday around here. We ALL drive north to the cabin, grill over charcoal, take the boat out multiple times, and much to my chagrin, my husband, brother-in law, and others buy and light off fireworks. (Ok, I kind of like it too!)
My husband and I consider the 4th of July as an anniversary of us so we tend to go overboard in celebrating. Plus it is just a great excuse to get together with family and enjoy a few days by the lake.
However, this year, for all our bad I'm going to try to do some good too-
Here's how you can celebrate a more green 4th of July.

If you must use paper plates. Look for compostable, biodegradable ones made from sugar, corn, or recycled paper. (I've noticed that Costco is carrying biodegradable plates and recyclable cups.)
Otherwise GreenPartyGoods is my good to favorite!

Did you know that Disney uses Sekon biodegradable fireworks. (Gunpowder-free “air launch” technology). Hey, maybe you can convince your city to convert next year.

RECYCLE all those pop and beer cans!

Choose local, organic foods. We are able to stop at a fish and farmers market on the way up. It is a never miss opportunity and I love meeting the farmers who grow the food. Plus they have a great home made ice cream stand that the kids love.

Tuck in tight. Add a touch of water.

Well, last week was slow and I apologize. But I have a good excuse! I was busy getting ready for a surprise 30th birthday party for my husband. Trust me, I wanted to tell you but I didn't want him to read my blog and ruin the surprise.

A big fan

I know ceiling fans are supposed to be energy efficient. However, when it came to building our house I just couldn't put any in. I grew up in the 80's where my parents installed ugly little fans in all the rooms. Ceiling fans and their designs date a house so quickly.
Today while shopping at Ikea, my kids started scream, "Windmill, windmill!!!". "No honeys there are no windmills inside Ikea, (then I looked up) thats just, a big ass fan." And low and behold, it really was a Big Ass Fan.
Now had I seen these while building our house I would have made sure to design a room just to put one of these in! Amazing... (I could totally make one work in our kitchen.)

Whip it up Wednesday: Compost

Everywhere I go I have been seeing compost bins. Big ones, little ones, indoor ones, outdoor ones. Whatever happened to just making a pile in your yard? (Ok yes, maybe a bin is a little less of an eye sore if you live in the city!)
But, if you are lucky enough to have some space, here is a simple way to make a compost pile and USE IT next year!

The trick is to make two piles. One for odd numbered years, and one for even numbers.
Build a base 6" thick of branches-or old palettes work great too!

Build it on a well drained flat area. Do not make a pile over shallow root trees. I made my piles right outside our garden gate. That way it is convenient to dump into and convenient to grab from.

Leaves are the main ingredient you'll want in your pile. Alternate grass clippings and "greens" from your household fold scraps. However NEVER ADD these items: Meat, bones, fat, oils, dairy products or processed foods to avoid odors and pests. Never add diseased plants, weeds with seeds, or cat or dog wastes.
(I keep a covered ice cream bucket under the sink to throw away banana peels, egg shells, and other fresh food scraps into. I empty it every other day and rinse it out!)

Turn or fluff your pile once a week.
It should be damp, not soaking wet, but about the consistency of a wrung out sponge.

Your pile will be ready for use next year. Then add your leaves and greens to the second pile while you pull from the first.

I've mentioned goats here a few times. I would love to have a few, but honestly, having never raised any type of livestock (except chickens) I have no idea what I'm doing. So I slowly research. Well, I found something that might help with my research- Rent-A-Goat! No kidding!

I've been watching the gas prices steadily go up, must mean a driving holiday is coming up...
Memorial Day. A weekend to work on the house and yard, open up the cabin, or visit distant family and friends.

Here are some great ways to enjoy an eco-friendly weekend.

*I've been told if you leave a bowl of sugar water away from where you are enjoying the outdoors the mosquito's will flock to it instead of you-I'm not sure that this would work in our dense yard, but I will try it!

*Keep the recycle bin next to the trash can. Now that my son's art is getting better I'll have him draw pictures of what can be thrown in.
*Keep a compost bin for food next to that! Throw it in a compost pile at the end of the night with your grass clippings and old leaves.

*Is there a local farmers market you can get your good grilling food from instead of a super market?

*Soap and water will clean your grill just as well as those harsh chemical sprays. A little more scrubbing, a lot less worrying.

*Use your regular dishes, cups, and silverware instead of disposables.

*Use natural charcoal without all the starter chemicals. Another option is wood briquettes which are all natural and will give your food that smoky taste.

*Buy your beer from a local brewery. With all the microbrewerys popping up it shouldn't be hard to find. In Minnesota we have Summit, Surly, Schell/GrainBelt, RockBottom. The complete list for MN here.

A little product plug...Florastor

You know me, I don't usually do this-product plugs! But, with my daughter's staph infection came some pretty heavy duty antibiotics. And with that seems to come a little extra time spent on the toilet (to put it politely).
When the Dr. wrote the prescription out she made sure to tell me to give Eve yogurt. No problem, but then I asked her if it was ok to give her Florastor, a probiotic, instead. She said YES! and usually she sends kids on big antibiotics home with some but she was out and didn't want to make me buy anything else!
No problem, I already had some!
We mixed it right in with some water and Eve drank it down (Yummy Tutti Fruity taste) and hasn't had to spend any extra time in the bathroom!

"Florastor Kids is okay to take with antibiotics as it is natural yeast that works even when taken with antibiotics†. Making sure you have the right number of "good microorganisms" may help reduce bloating and gas often caused by an imbalance of microorganisms."

While it is not something I would give my kids everyday, when they are having a hard time, it is something I will use.

I've been hiding since Mother's Day- which was awesome by the way! The kids made me a fabulous shirt and then we went flower shopping at our local hardware store.
But on Monday my daughter's hand looked like she had been burned again (Last summer she touched a hot motorcycle) and in the same spot as the old burn it was red, blistered, and oozing... yuck.
So, off to the Doctor we went where we were told she had a probable Staph Infection (we're still waiting on lab results). Time to disinfect the house! That is how I spent all day Monday and Tuesday! (But it gave us a good chance to thin out the toys!)
Here are two of my favorite disinfectants:

Disinfectant #1
1 cup Hydrogen Peroxide
1 cup Water
Spray and wipe!

Disinfectant #2
2 cups Vinegar
1 cup Water
Spray and wipe!

I honestly don't expect anything for Mother's day. My kids are 2 & 3, a nice huge and a cuddle will do perfectly!
But if they were to get a gift I'd hope they go somewhere down these "green" lines.

-Breakfast outside! A cup of coffee, some toast! Enjoying the birds and the sun.

-Go to the flower store and let the kids pick their favorite plants for my garden. Cut flowers are so boring.

-A chalk drawing outside on the driveway! A picture is better than a card any day!

-Then again, if they were going to buy me something there is always this robe I've been lusting after...

As much as my son and daughter love picking these, I'm really not a fan. Luckily, so far we don't have too many, and the ones we do have I get rid of extremely easily!

To kill dandelions, spray directly with vinegar.
Make sure to not hit the surrounding plants. The vinegar kills the leafs but not the roots, so the next day you will have to pull the weed out in order to completely get rid of it! But once it is sprayed it will stop growing because it fries the leaves.
It seems to make the roots "cling" a little less so they are easier to pull out! Vinegar kills almost any plant or weed.
Just please avoid nasty pesticides and weed killers. They are so bad for you and the environment.

Of course, Dandelions only grow when the soil has improper soil pH. Here is some information for adding corn gluten to change the pH.

A couple weeks ago, this question was posed at Trying to Be Greener.
So, do you recycle those little cardboard rings inside your toilet paper (and paper towels)?

I have to admit, when my kids don't steal them to play with, they seldom end up in the recycle bin. Oops.
So this led me to wonder, are there other thing around the house I overlook when it comes to recycling...

*Bread bags. When I go to Costco I get three. The two breads each have their own, then they are wrapped together in a third. They now get put in with all the other plastic bags.

*Batteries-Sometimes I forget their are so many places that take these and just throw them away. Now I'll save them and drop them off at IKEA next time I go. (There are plenty of other places you can bring them too)

*Bottle tops. Remember Aveda takes them now.

What am I still forgetting? Anything you admittedly forget to recycle?

Illnesses come and go. Serious ones like this make the news. Someone in our home town was just confirmed to be carrying the disease. I'm not in panic mode and don't think I will be. We practice common sense. Wash hands, keep them out of the kids mouths (when possible!), cover our mouths, etc.

As spring comes, I can't help but get excited for fresh local produce. (Ok, it is Minnesota, I have a little while to wait). But sitting in my freezer are still a few frozen bags of raspberries, strawberries, and blueberries picked fresh last year. Time to clean them out and make room!
The kids are, believe it or not, getting sick of smoothies, so I decided to try out making fruit roll ups!
And get this, it is super easy!

Homemade Fruit Roll Ups!
Throw in frozen fruit, any and all! Berries work best. I used Raspberries and Blueberries.
You need a small amount of liquid to make a good puree, but remember, the more you add the more time it takes to dry out the fruit. To sweeten ours up, I added Mango Nectar.
You can add other sweeteners, but ours was perfect as it (Fruit and Mango Nectar). Honey, sugar, cinnamon, molasses, maple syrup, are all options.
Lightly spray a baking tray with non-stick baking spray.
2 cups of puree will make enough to cover 14"x18"x1/4".
Spread accordingly, but no thicker that 1/4".

Put in oven at 150-170' and prop door open at the top. Drying takes a little while so do as much as you can and rotate if you need to. (And do it at off peak hours!)

Mine took about 5 hours. You'll know it is done when it is no longer sticky and has the same consistency of a fruit roll up. Cut into strips and roll around plastic wrap or parchment or wax paper. (also note, I kept the seed in mine, you might want to take them out...they do get stuck in your teeth!)

IF, you happen to over cook the fruit, no worries! They make great chips too!! We crumble them up and serve it over ice cream! Yum!

Recycle it all.

So when you go to recycle that milk carton, what do you do with the lid? If you toss it in with the carton did you know it can't be recycled. And, if you throw it away it could end up being mistaken as food by birds and marine creatures...
Well now they can be re-purposed. Aveda will gladly accept your rigid plastic caps at any Aveda salon or store.
So start a little bag next to your garbage, your recycling, your whatever, and next time you go to get pampered, pamper the earth a little too.

Arbor Day Diggings

Today is Arbor day. (Why doesn't Google have a cute little drawing for today?) The kids and I spent the morning spreading mulch. When we got the second truckload the kids were given free spruce tree seedlings for Arbor day. I was hoping the trees I had ordered for the garden would show up today, but we decided to make due with the two little seedlings.
Both kids dug their holes and planted them where they wanted. (Surprisingly they choose a pretty good place!)
Then I "planted" our fence posts for the garden. We are using Chinese Elm trees as fence posts since they are a very invasive tree around here and this was a nice way to cut them down and reuse them! We're so inventive!
So go outside, enjoy the shade from the trees. Ours are just budding and it is beautiful!

It's Wednesday and it is Earth Day. Tonight, when I'm done working in the garden I'll open a bottle of Cade wine to celebrate. The kids and I put carrot seeds in the veggie garden, then we laid down eco-friendly, made from recycled paper weed block in the flower garden. We really didn't do too much differently-enjoy the outdoors, reduce our waste, reuse what we can, and recycle what we can't.
To top off Earth week, Friday is Arbor day, a day rooted in even more history than the newer Earth day! We will walk our orchard, see if the peach tree survived the winter, and if we're lucky the trees we ordered will arrive and we can plant them!
Enjoy and celebrate. We live on a beautiful, amazing earth-lets not take advantage of it.

It is Earth Week. While I think this is a fantastic time of the year I hope those celebrating can turn their week long activities into daily habits.
Here are some easy ones:

*Try to go all week without using bags from any store, bring your own! By the end of the week you'll remember to grab your reusable bags when you're gathering your purse and keys.

*Take part in a community clean-up. Pick up trash at a local park or along side a highway. And next time you're walking across a parking lot and see a pop bottle someone tossed, pick it up and recycle it accordingly.

*Can you go a day at work without printing something? A week? Think before you print!

*Wash your clothes in cold water, hang them to dry. Air dried sheets=a perfect nights sleep.

*I don't know if it is a Minnesota thing, but don't idle your car when you are waiting for someone or running into a store for a second. I can alway find at least 5 cars idling when I drop my son off and walk him into preschool. There is NO REASON, especially now that it is not -20. Turn your car off.

*Buy in bulk and divvy out portions for lunches or snacks in re-usable containers.

All these are simple, easy, steps you can make for the week, and carry into the rest of the year. Happy Earth week.

Spring is here and I am itching to be outside in every minute of it. Since we have done pretty much everything to get our garden ready I thought the kids and I could start the chore of washing windows and screens. I made a bucket of warm water and vinegar, grabbed a handful of old rags and we went to work.
We brought our dog outside and the trick with him is that you have to completely tire him out if you want to get anything done. The kids and I lined up sticks and balls and began throwing. After 20 minutes he finally started to "jog" back to us-he was tired. So off to work the three of us went while the dog laid in the shade. The kids had a blast getting all wet while wiping the windows and I tried my best to dry the windows up. That's when I heard my son yell, "Mom, Trash (our dog's name...) won't stop drinking the cleaner."
I ran over, pulled the dog away, and then explained to my son why it's not good that he is drinking the water, but it won't hurt him. My son is starting to understand why he can always help Mommy clean, but not always at Grandma's house.
I love that my kids love helping me clean, and have fun at it. And I love that I can feel safe about what they are using.
So while you're doing your Spring Cleaning, remember almost everything you need to get your house sparkling is right in your kitchen pantry.

We had a lovely weekend. We use Easter as an excuse to celebrate Spring, and the weather cooperated 100%. On Saturday we went to the farm store and decided on seeds for the garden, then we came home and picked pussy willows. On Easter we were able to play outside the whole day, and luckily, the weather has continued into the week.
Today we're having "farmer grandpa" come over and till the garden with his tractor. (It needs a lot of work, we are planting in an old sticker bush field-yikes.) Tomorrow the kids and I will plant seeds in our seedling trays.
It is so hard on these beautiful days to remember that I can't quiet put flowers in the ground yet. That the sunflower seeds have to wait. That in Minnesota it always freezing going into May. But I love the anticipation of the seasons-I wouldn't trade it for the world!

I was going to order my seeds through SeedsOfChange but I was pleasantly surprised that our farm store now carries a variety of organic seed (though the selection of limited). Whip it up Wednesday: A green Easter

The wheat grass is planted, the baskets (we reuse the same ones every year) are out, and dreams of spring are in the air. I'm sure if you're here you know all about the eco-unfriendliness of Easter- plastic eggs and grass, cocoa beans from disadvantaged, environmentally unfriendly places around the world, and all that over packaged candy!

Here are some tips to go Green(er) this Easter:

*If you forgot to plant your wheat grass in time- consider filling the basket with unbuttered, unsalted popcorn instead of plastic grass or shredded paper.

*Take your kids old crayons, melt them in the oven on an old cooking tray, and pour the warm wax into Jell-o egg molds. When they harden the kids have new crayons with crazy colors in an Egg shape! Here is another take on making Egg shaped crayons with Cookie cutters.

*Speaking of crayons-instead of using traditional dye kits or boiling onions to dye your eggs, try this: Hot Rock Eggs. Aren't they AMAZING! I'd skip the Mod Podge though.

*We are filling our eggs (yes we have plastic eggs we reuse each year) with stamp kits, stickers, money, and a few with candy (like th organic lollipops from Trader Joes).

*I know it is late to order online, but last year I put THIS organic, plush, Peter Rabbit and a Flopsy in the baskets and put a few treats in their laps. My kids were thrilled!

*Spend the day outside with family. Is your ground thawed enough- can you till the garden? Pick out seeds with the kids? Go on a nature walk? Find pussy willows and make a bouquet?

Adding color!

Yesterday the kids and I decided that we needed to bring a little color into the house. Sick and tired of only seeing brown outside and patiently waiting for the tulips to pop through the ground is making us all a little crazy! So, while I'm not Martha Stewart or even half as talented as most mommy bloggers out there- the kids and I whipped up these button flowers to add to our house plants. (And giveaway as Easter presents!) I thought it was a great "green" craft everyone could enjoy.

What you need:
Random leftover buttons with holes through the middle
20-26 gauge wire (found in the jewelery making section of any craft store)
A house plant that needs color
Wire cutters

It is really simple, even my 2 year old could do it if I put the smallest button on for her. Cut the wire to desired length. Sew the buttons on the wire. Don't center it, but leave one side with a long "stem" and the other with enough wire to twist under the buttons. Stack as many or as few as you want. It is nice to go from smallest to largest, but I let the kids do whatever they wanted.
When you have enough "plant" them throughout your house plants, or simply make a nice modern bouquet and put alone in a vase.

A small confession...

Well, even though there were posts, I took the last week off and traveled to the fantastic paradise of Hawaii. The Big Island-with NO KIDS!

Andrew and I spent the week snorkeling, hiking (LOTS of hiking), exploring the volcanoes, rain forests, and waterfalls. Enjoying really good food and drinks, watching dolphins, whales, and manta rays, getting stung by a sea urchin (I'm still limping...), and just relaxing. It was amazing. But we're back- a little jet lagged, but excited to play with the kids and return to the real world.

Close the laptop, turn off the TV, grab a book and read with the kids, play a board game. And if the kids are sleeping I can think of a great thing to do with your spouse!

Who doesn't love a good beer! Andrew and I have been brewing our own on and off for 3 years now. It is a lot of fun and the outcome is almost always good-except that one time it exploded all over and we had to repaint an entire room!

Who knew it was green too!

You can re-use old beer bottle.
There is little carbon footprint transporting your beer from fridge to couch!
If you really get into it you can grow your own grains and hops.
It makes a fantastic present where the receiver can enjoy then recycle!

Whip it up Wednesday: Stainless steel...again!

I have a stainless steel fridge and I hate it. I have tried every recipe I have found and while some work, a lot of them take a lot of time and have even more clean-up that I want. I like something fast- so I've tried Method wipes and their polishing sprays...nothing has done the trick in the way I want to. To be honest, what works best for me is one of the simplest recipes I have.
To quickly spray my fridge and remove almost all of those greasy kid prints I take Vinegar Water. Spray on the RAG, wipe on, and polish dry.
EASY! And while it won't get rid of everything- it is a quick fix!

Well if there ever was a day to be green...today probably isn't the best day. I'm not a drop of Irish, but I do enjoy a good boiled cabbage dinner. I DO avoid the green beer (Hello, Petroleum-derived Green #3)-why your hangover is so much worse after this holiday celebration. Also, most those beers are served in Plastic #6 polystyrene cup which are known to leech carcinogens to the beverage inside. Not to mention adding tons of waste to the landfill...
If you do go out tonight, keep the car at home. Not only is it SAFER, but more eco-friendly to carpool (with a DD) or take public transit. May the luck of the Irish be yours and all that other St. Patty's stuff!

Soften your babies hair with formaldehyde?

The health and beauty industry is one of the scariest industries out there. Companies are allowed to use nearly ANY ingredient in personal-care products with no required safety assessment. This goes for your products and your baby's products. When you see the word fragrance, just put the product down-fragrance is know as being a "Trade-Secret" so companies don't have to disclose all the nasty ingredients that goes into making them-(PHTHALATES to name one). And as if we didn't have enough to worry about here is something else. Healthy Legacy, an upstart associated with the Minneapolis-based Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy, says that formaldehyde and the lesser known 1,4 dioxane are present in more than half of the children's products tested, including Johnson's Baby Shampoo, Sesame Street Bubble Bath, Grins and Giggles Milk & Honey Baby Washing, and Huggies Naturally Refreshing Cucumber & Green Tea Baby Wash. The group says that 23 of 28 tested products contained formaldehyde levels that exceed levels that Health Canada has reported as dangerous. The highest levels of the chemical were found in Baby Magic Baby Lotion and American Girl Show.

What can you do? Avoid using products that list ingredients that may be contaminated with 1,4-dioxane, including sodium myreth sulfate, PEG compounds and chemicals that include the clauses "xynol," "ceteareth" and "oleth." Similarly, avoid products that contain formaldehye-releasing preservatives, including quaternium-15, DMDM hydantoin, imidazolidinyl urea and diazolidinyl urea. To search for products without these marker chemicals, use the advanced search in EWG's Skin Deep database and check the "Contamination concerns" box.
And always, be caution of healthy and beauty products labeled natural and organic. These terms are NOT YET REGULATED in this industry. Trust products that CLEARLY label ALL ingredients.

We heard geese fly over yesterday, never mind that it is -2' today, it is (almost) spring. Time for Spring Cleaning. Last week I decided I needed to clean myself so I started researching different detox methods. I decided on the Master Cleanse because of the emphasis on raw foods. So I started on Sunday, you start with a "salt water flush", which was horrible. Maybe because I've dealt with three different colonoscopy's that I am not a fan of the sudden urge feeling. (If you've had to have the drink before one of these you know what I am talking about.) But I lived through it. Then you basically rotate water with a lemonade type mixture. The first day was a piece of cake. Day two was harder, I had tons of cravings, plus the kids were CRAZY. I felt on edge all day. By day three I was pretty much done. I was achy, had a constant headache, and was sick of going to the bathroom all the time. So I stopped and had a plate of carrots and then some fruit.
What can I say, I have will power, however I'm just a girl that really needs food. (Seriously I have a crazy high metabolism rate-I'm going to enjoy it while I can!)
Fortunately by luck I was emailed a great article about fresh food detox for the spring. They gave of shopping list of foods that are PERFECT during the spring months to help detoxify and keep your digestive and lymph systems working at their peak. These foods help you feel better, boost fat burn, and prevent illness during the months of spring! No offensive to all those who can stick out a 10 day fast, it just isn't for me!

What a wonderful weekend we had. We spent all day Friday (yes, I count Friday as a weekend day!) outside. It was beautiful and we went on a huge swamp walk. It is perfect this time of year. The grass is still laying down on the snowmobile trails and the water is still mostly frozen underneath. Saturday we took the kids to the Mall of America- we quickly realized that the whole world must be on Spring Break this week- it was NUTS. Sunday we had a lovely brunch and celebrated Grandpa's Birthday. I think I might just incorporate Monday into my weekend to so it doesn't have to stop!

On walls, or, ahem, on floors. Super sticky ones...the kinds kid shouldn't have...
Don't ask me where they got them from, but our little art project of the morning went from art table, to working on the ground, to directly on the floor. Now, we have a cement floor and just about anything wipes right off, but the sticker were STUCK. Especially because they were laying on them and their body heat really made them sticky.
Now, my husband and I used to be Goo-Gone fanatics, but I thought I'd try something else first, and it actually worked!

To remove, sponge vinegar over them several times, and wait 15 minutes, then rub off the stickers. This also works for price tags (stickers) on tools, etc.

I had all kinds of plans for today, then my hubby came home sick. My son and daughter seem to have it too...grr.
I do have to quick give out a HUGE Thank you to Jeremiah over at Z-Recs.
Well before Thanksgiving I won a Singer Curvy sewing machine-talk about thrilled! But then it didn't come and didn't come. I've had this experience before with blog giveaways-sometimes the prize is too good to be true- (A Bento bag is one that still hurts a bit!) and the blog owner just ignores you, so I usually don't even write if I don't get a prize. It was free after all!
But I thought I'd write Z-Recs just to see if there was a mix up. Well there had been, and Jeremiah and Singer bent over backwards to make sure I got my own sewing machine. It came yesterday and I am more than thrilled. (Maybe I should call in sick to work so I can use it all night tonight!)

I just want to say THANKS again to Jeremiah, Z-Recs, and Singer. The kids already have a huge list of projects for me! (A coat, pajamas, a dress, clothes for baby, a pillow case- were all things they shouted to me as soon as I asked what I could make for them!)

The folks at The Real Deal just sent me this fabulous hat made from Brazilian tarps. When I first opened it up all I could think about was summer and gardening- but what more perfect place to wear it than hiking up and down a volcano!
The hat is amazing, it looks like it has been worn for 20 years- like a great pair of boots. And it fits PERFECT, meaning if it gets winding, it is probably going to stay on. (Unless my hair gets really curly in the Hawaii humidity, then it might be a touch tight).
The best thing is, the Real Deal has a whole page dedicated to how to bend your hat. Who knew there were so many great ways to wear it. I'll have to put up a photo of me in it-but the self portrait thing just isn't working today!

Ash Wednesday

Tomorrow is Ash Wednesday. The first day of Lent, where Christians give up a vice for the next 40 days. Now I am not Catholic, or much of a Christian, but I have to say I love what two Senior Bishops (The Bishop of Liverpool, Rev James Jones and the Bishop of London, Rev Richard Chartres) in England said- They asked their congregation that instead of giving up a favorite food or drink, to give up CARBON!
*Maybe you could give up paper towels or bring your own coffee cup to Starbucks in the morning.
*I've said it a MILLION TIMES but stop using paper and plastic and buy yourself a cute reusable bag.
*Get rid of the plastic water bottle! It takes 5 bottle of water to make 1 water bottle.
*Giving up meat is a great way to reduce your carbon footprint. I have a friend who does this during Lent and every Friday night they have a huge pancake party. They make huge pancakes with all the toppings from syrup to M&M's to whip cream and strawberries-see you can have fun with no meat. Plus her husband is a huge hunter, I have no idea how she managed this!

I know I love white teeth. However I am not a fan of all those in home and dentist whitening, err, bleaching kits. I've heard that besides them being somewhat toxic, they also break down enamel on the teeth. No good! Here is a simple whitener you can use at home and feel safe about.

Mix baking soda and 3% Hydrogen Peroxide to form a paste

Spring fever

I have it, and I have it bad. And I have it for one main reason. I can't wait to plant our garden.
Now I am by NO means a gardener, and in all honestly, I barely know one plant from the other, but I'm learning.
Well, I found a guide that helps with everything when it comes to planting your garden.
The 2009 Spring Garden Guide. " Once you establish the frost-free date for your area, this planner will tell you each week what seeds can be started, what can be planted out, and what can be direct sowed from now through the end of the spring planting season." It has areas for you to keep notes on what is planted and where. This is going to be my bible for the growing season...I can already taste the fresh green beans!

I'm enjoying my green M&M's at the moment. And not green because they are eco-friendly, just green because M&M's are strange and want to introduce a whole new color to this holiday. The kids are decorating their valentine's cards-cutting, pasting, stamping, drawing, sticking, who knows what else! I'll be serving organic wine and dinner at my restaurant tomorrow night, wishing I was home with my hubby- but somewhat glad at the same time-I'm not much of a "Hallmark Holiday" kind of girl. There I said it! But, take time to give everyone you love an extra special hug and kiss.

Getting to summer early

My husband and I just did a really un-green thing. We booked a flight to Hawaii! To make up for our long flight I did book us an eco-friendly car, which I doubt we'll be driving much. I literally plan to lay in the sun for about three days and do nothing!

So now I am off to search for a cute eco-friendly bikini (can someone help on this?), and some sort of natural hair remover-because I just can't go to a salon for that! Has anyone had any luck with Bikini Kitty?

Whip it up Wednesday: The tub

Have you ever noticed that no matter WHAT you do, right after your kids take a bath you get that really nasty soap scum ring? (No? I must have dirty kids...)
I hate cleaning it, and it seems like I am cleaning it every day- this is the one thing I don't think daily shower misting can take care of. So, while this doesn't clean itself, it does make it a little easier on the elbow grease.

Soap scum remover
Apply baking soda, scrub with a damp cloth or sponge.
Baking soda is Non-abrasive and will not scratch.
Do not use Borax, it is abrasive and will scratch.

Now I'm off to make the tub even dirtier than my kids can-Our dog realized that the ground thawed just enough for him to dig again...nothing better than mud all over a white dog.

We are getting back to normal. Getting some answers for our daughter, and enjoying the, ahem, warm (35') weather. Hey that is a heat wave here!

Going organic with a cold

A while ago I was sent some cough drops from TryingToBeGreener for Bee MD Organic Honey Throat Drops. I was super excited, till I saw that they contained...menthol.
I was traumatized with menthol as a kid. Remember those Halls drops that contained menthol. I couldn't even suck on them for a minute. It would burn my nose and mouth and it was all my mom would give me. Since then I have stayed away from ANY sort of cough drop with menthol-so much so that I usually just suck on Lifesavers when I have a tickle in my throat for fear that they forgot to list menthol on the cough drop ingredient list.
Well last night laying in bed, I got a cough. I tried everything to stop it. Then Andrew finally got annoyed, put his knee in my back and told me to go get something for the cough. I searched our medicine box-nothing. Then I found the Bee MD Organic Honey Throat Drops in back of the closet. Hmmm..."I guess since I'm desperate I'll try them" I thought.

So I grabbed a few drops and a tissue to spit them in. Laid back down and put one in.
At first all I tasted was honey. So much so that I doubted their was menthol in it. Then, I started to taste it, but it was light and not at ALL overwhelming. I kept it in the whole time, and it stopped my cough, made my throat a little less sore, and allowed Andrew to get some sleep!
Today I still have my cough and have been using the drops all day. I love them for two reasons.
1. All organic ingredients (have you ever seen that in a cough drop before?!)
2. NOT an overwhelming menthol flavor AT ALL! And I now understand WHY people enjoy menthol in cough drops!

Maybe you're lucky and you live where you can open your windows every once in a while in the winter and "air out". Not here! The stale winter house smell is starting to get with me.
Hopefully by now you know the dangers of air fresheners-"Most commercial spray, plug-in, and other type air fresheners contain numerous toxic ingredients. From aerosols, ammonia, and bad synthetic fragrances to those tiny plastic plug-in holders that need to go somewhere and it’s unlikely they get recycled." -TreeHuggingFamily
So- what to do...wait for spring, NO WAY!
Here are two options:

Home Made Air Freshener Spray
Fill a spray bottle with water
Add 5 drops of your favorite essential oil per 1 cup water

Spray and enjoy!

My FAVORITE way to scent the house
Honestly my favorite way is to bake fresh bread or apple pie. YUM! But when I don't have the time I take a pot of water and boil orange peels and spices. (Cloves, Cinnamon sticks, nutmeg, etc.) Smells like I baked something fantastic, but there are no calories laying around the house!

I can't wait for spring though, there is nothing better than an air fresh house-wait, I totally forgot about line dried sheets...

Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow yesterday morning, which means 6 more weeks of winter.
Yuck. Is anyone else in agreement that this winter has gone on far too long?! (And I'm usually such a winter girl!) We have had snow since the end of November and this winter it has actually stuck around. On Saturday we lucked out and had a beautiful 45+ degree day, but that has made it even harder-but boy Spring cleaning sure set in that day-especially since it broke our 38 day streak of below freezing temperatures.

There are a few things to keep you (or just me!) cheery through the rest of winter:

1. NieNie is back- she's been back for a little while. Her posts actually make me a little teary eyed every time I read them, but I love every one of them!

2. GreenBabyBargains...I'm addicted to anything that has the word Green and Bargain in the same sentence! Love this site!

3. Girl Scouts are out in full force! Hurray for cookies. (probably not green, but Girl Scouts is a great thing for little ones!)

4. Eve has one more big test and answers are on their way. (We already found out that she does not have Long QT Syndrome which was something we were very nervous about.) What a trooper for a freshly turned 2 year old!

5. Because of the recession a lot of stores around here still have a lot of Christmas stock left. We went out shopping and found deals at some of my favorite green boutiques at 75-90% and at the national chain Pottery Barn, up to 90% off. Wow. I even bought a gift book to write down WHAT I bought and where it is- I'm all about organization this year.

6. My son LOVE's preschool. He wakes up and tells me he dreams he gets to go to school every day.

So be honest, How many contests did you enter last week? Unfortunately we were too busy running from Dr. to Dr. that I only was able to browse for one evening, but there was a lot of great stuff up for grabs.

Plus we are at an MRI this morning and I just couldn't pull myself together to get a list up! But I think we are getting back to normal!

Our Visit

I thought lasts weeks wait would be hard, but this one is even worse.
We went to the neurologist's office EARLY this morning. Poor Eve, I woke her up and she kept crying, "sleep, sleep". Poor baby.
Not a morning girl.
I left early because you never know with rush hour if your going to be sitting for an hour in traffic or get their an hour early.
We were the latter.
Which was good.
The Doctor was happy to see us early. We were his first patient. After a really nice talk and examine the Doctor ruled it down to two things. Either a seizure or Long QT Syndrome (her EKG came back borderline from the ER). Because we were early they were able to fit us in for an EEG. She looked like a little robot with 40 some wires coming from her head.
Then she got all wrapped up so she looked more like a mummy.
It was pretty cute.
Afterwards we visited Daddy at work, ate suckers, played with stickers, got McDonald's, and now she's getting her beauty sleep.
So this week we get a physical with her regular pediatrician. Then Monday we have to do an MRI, which she will have to be sedated for. Then Wednesday we'll head to the cardiologists office for a more extensive EKG and other tests. And I have to imagine waiting for answers after all of that is going to be the hardest.

A change in plans

I usually am not long winded when I type my blog posts- I'm a believer in short and sweet! I also try to keep my posts relatively clear of our personal lives- they are usually pretty boring. But as I sit down to type this blog post I have a feeling I am going to break these two "rules".
Yesterday morning started out as a typical morning. Cade couldn't wait to get his sister up, so the minute he heard her in her room he ran in to get her. They both came to the bar for breakfast and I poured their cereal and milk into their bowls. Then Genevieve went face first into her bowl and slumped down to the hard cement floor from the high bar stool. No cries, just stillness, laying on the floor. I screamed for my husband in the shower, who somehow actually heard me. We called Grandpa, who rushed over to watch Cade (they live next door) and we rushed to the hospital.
She slowly came to, but wanted to keep closing her eyes. The car ride was just awful for me, I was driving, it was rush hour, and I was only concentrating on my daughter.
Thankfully NO ONE was at the ER. We were in as soon as we got there. Poor girl had a heart and lung monitor, EKG, CT scan, an IV, countless viles of blood taken, had to pee in a cup (thank god she is potty trained otherwise they would have had to do a catheter), and a hundred other tests, for over 5 hours, and all the while she never cried or complained, but was more interested in watching exactly how they did everything-what a little Doctor.
They found she had a seizure. Then we started to put two and two together-this wasn't the first, just the first we've witnessed. We've had times where we've gone in her room and she is just laying on her bed white and lethargic. I've brought her in to the pediatrician, but was told this is how her body deals with stress and illness. Come to figure out she probably had a seizure, alone in her room, and I was seeing the aftermath as she comes to.
We are going to see a pediatric neurologist on Monday. I don't think I'll sleep till then. I know there are parents out there who deal with a whole lot more than this, but when it is your child, it literally feels like the end of the world-especially in this interim without any real answers.
All this is my way of saying, blog posts may be a little scattered this week. I'm supposed to being doing a Welch's Aqua Juice giveaway, but I'll probably just direct you to some other blogs that are doing it. And hopefully after Monday we will start to get some answers and some solutions so I can again type with two hands, because I won't let Eve out of my reach until, at the least, then.
